Altars can be found indoors or outdoors, in temples, homes,
or symbolically placed anywhere.
An atlar can be any place where offerings such as votive offerings or sacrifices are given and gathered for religious purposes, or a sacred place where ceremonies are held. Altars play an important role in Voodoo, Wicca, Neo-pagan and Shamanic religions, as well as Christianity, Taoism, Hinduism, and Buddhism among others. They are often used for worship, remembrance, and respect for divine or spiritual nature. At the House of Voodoo there are altars setup up for Marie Laveau where the public are welcome to visit and leave an offering if they wish. No photographs or physical handling of the altar is allowed out of respect to the Voodoo Queen of New Orleans.
